Kotilingeshwara Temple: A Monumental Shrine to Lord Shiva Guide
The Kotilingeshwara Temple, located in Kammasandra village of Kolar district, is a unique and awe-inspiring temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is renowned for housing a staggering number of Shiva Lingas – over a crore (ten million) – making it a truly remarkable sight. It's a place where you can witness the devotion of countless devotees and marvel at the sheer scale of this spiritual endeavor. The temple was founded by Sri Sambha Shiva Murthy Swamy in 1980. His vision was to install one crore Shiva Lingas, hence the name "Kotilingeshwara" (meaning "one crore Lingas"). Over the years, devotees from all over the world have contributed to the installation of these Lingas, making it a collective effort of faith and devotion. The temple continues to grow, with more Lingas being added regularly. Visitors can wander through the vast expanse of Shiva Lingas, each one unique in size and design. The temple also features a massive Shiva Linga, one of the tallest in the world, and a large Nandi statue. You can participate in prayers and rituals, offer your own Linga to the collection, and soak in the spiritual atmosphere. The temple complex also includes other shrines and facilities for devotees. The temple offers simple vegetarian meals to visitors.
Transportation
The Kotilingeshwara Temple is located in Kammasandra village, which is about 6 km from Kolar. You can reach Kolar by bus or train from Bangalore. From Kolar, you can hire a taxi or auto-rickshaw to reach the temple. KSRTC buses also operate from Kolar to Kammasandra. Bus from Kolar to Kammasandra: Take the bus towards Bethamangala.
