Dhanushkodi was a bustling port town and a popular pilgrimage site before the catastrophic cyclone of 1964. It served as a gateway to Sri Lanka, with regular ferry services connecting the two countries. The cyclone, however, washed away much of the town, claiming countless lives and leaving behind a trail of destruction. The Indian government declared Dhanushkodi a ghost town, and it remained largely uninhabited for many years. Today, the ruins of the town stand as a stark reminder of the cyclone's impact, while the natural beauty of the coastline continues to draw visitors. Visiting Erosion Point is a unique experience. You can walk along the beach, explore the ruins of the old town, and witness the confluence of the two seas. The views are particularly stunning at sunrise and sunset. You can also take a jeep ride to the point, as the road is sandy and challenging for regular vehicles. While Dhanushkodi itself doesn't have a wide array of culinary options, you can find fresh seafood at small stalls along the way. Transportation
Reaching Erosion Point requires a bit of an adventure. First, you need to reach Rameswaram, the nearest major town. From Rameswaram, you can hire a jeep or take a shared jeep to Dhanushkodi. The road to Dhanushkodi is partially paved, but the final stretch to Erosion Point is sandy and requires a 4x4 vehicle. Jeeps are readily available for hire in Rameswaram and offer a thrilling ride through the dunes and along the coastline. The journey takes approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour.
