Gupt Godavari: Unveiling the Mystery of the Hidden River Guide

Gupt Godavari, meaning "Hidden Godavari," is a pair of caves located a short distance from Chitrakoot. These caves are renowned for their natural beauty and the mysterious underground stream that flows through them. The caves are a popular attraction for tourists and pilgrims alike, offering a unique and intriguing experience. Legend has it that Lord Rama and Lakshmana used these caves as a secret meeting place during their exile. The name "Gupt Godavari" comes from the belief that the Godavari River, one of the major rivers of India, flows secretly through these caves before emerging elsewhere. The caves themselves are naturally formed and feature narrow passages and impressive rock formations. Visitors can explore the two main caves. The first cave is wider and taller, with a stream of water flowing through it. The second cave is narrower and deeper, and it is believed that Lord Rama and Lakshmana held their court here. You can wade through the water in the first cave (be prepared to get your feet wet!) and admire the natural formations. There are also local guides available who can share stories and legends associated with the caves. While there are no specific culinary traditions associated with the caves, you can find small shops selling snacks and refreshments near the entrance.
