Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary: A Haven for Avian Wonders Guide

Discover the Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary, a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts located near Beypore in Kerala, India. This sanctuary is a seasonal home to over a hundred species of native birds and around 60 species of migratory birds. The sanctuary is spread over a cluster of islands where the Kadalundipuzha River flows into the Arabian Sea, creating a rich ecosystem of mangroves, mudflats, and estuaries. The Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary doesn't have a long, documented history in the traditional sense. Its significance lies in its ecological importance as a crucial stopover point for migratory birds traveling long distances. The sanctuary has been recognized for its biodiversity and plays a vital role in the conservation of avian species. Local communities have traditionally relied on the resources of the estuary, and efforts are underway to promote sustainable tourism and conservation practices. Visitors to the Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary can enjoy birdwatching, boating, and nature walks. The best time to visit is between December and April when migratory birds are present in large numbers. You can hire local boats to explore the islands and observe the birds up close. The sanctuary also has watchtowers that offer panoramic views of the area. While Beypore is known for its traditional boat-building industry, the culinary traditions around the sanctuary focus on fresh seafood.
