The Matrimandir is the central focus of Auroville, an experimental township in Tamil Nadu, India, dedicated to human unity. The inner chamber, known as the Inner Chamber, houses a large crystal globe that focuses sunlight, creating a powerful and serene atmosphere. The surrounding gardens are meticulously designed and represent different aspects of consciousness. Visitors can experience the Matrimandir in several ways. After an orientation, you can obtain a pass for viewing the outer structure and gardens. To enter the Inner Chamber for silent concentration, a longer process involving registration and preparation is required. The surrounding gardens are open to all and offer a peaceful space for reflection. Auroville itself offers various workshops and activities related to spirituality, sustainable living, and community building. While Auroville has a diverse culinary scene with influences from around the world, the focus is on healthy, vegetarian food, often grown locally. Transportation
The Matrimandir is located within Auroville, which is about 10 km north of Pondicherry. From Pondicherry, you can hire a taxi or auto-rickshaw to reach Auroville. Several buses also run from Pondicherry to Auroville's main gate. From the Auroville Visitor Centre, you can take a shuttle bus or walk to the Matrimandir viewing point. Access to the Inner Chamber requires prior booking and a guided visit.
