Golden Temple Guide
Harmandir Sahib: The Abode of God Guide
Welcome to the Golden Temple, also known as Harmandir Sahib, the holiest shrine in Sikhism. This stunning gurdwara, shimmering with gold, is a place of profound spiritual significance and architectural beauty. More than just a religious site, it's a symbol of equality, brotherhood, and selfless service, welcoming visitors of all faiths and backgrounds. Prepare to be mesmerized by its serene atmosphere and the unwavering devotion of its followers. The Golden Temple's history dates back to the 16th century when the fourth Sikh Guru, Guru Ram Das, founded the city of Amritsar and initiated the construction of the temple. The fifth Guru, Guru Arjan Dev, completed the structure and installed the Adi Granth, the Sikh scripture, within it. Maharaja Ranjit Singh, in the 19th century, overlaid the gurdwara with gold leaf, giving it its iconic appearance. The temple has faced periods of destruction and reconstruction throughout its history, standing as a testament to the resilience of the Sikh community. Visitors can participate in various activities at the Golden Temple. Take a parikrama (circumambulation) around the holy pool, Amrit Sarovar, and listen to the melodious Gurbani (Sikh hymns) being sung. Volunteer in the Langar (community kitchen), where thousands of free meals are served daily to all visitors, regardless of their background. Witness the Palki Sahib ceremony, where the Guru Granth Sahib is carried to its resting place each night and brought back in the morning. Don't forget to cover your head with a scarf (available at the entrance) as a sign of respect. The Langar hall offers a simple but fulfilling vegetarian meal, a cornerstone of Sikh hospitality. The food is prepared and served by volunteers, emphasizing selfless service and equality.
