Barnafoss Waterfall Guide
Barnafoss: Iceland's Children's Waterfall Guide
Barnafoss, meaning "Children's Waterfall," is a stunning and powerful waterfall located in West Iceland, near Reykholt. Unlike many Icelandic waterfalls that cascade dramatically from great heights, Barnafoss is characterized by its turbulent, milky-blue waters rushing through a narrow gorge. The surrounding landscape is equally captivating, with lava fields and lush vegetation creating a picturesque setting. It's a must-see for anyone exploring the Borgarfjörður region. The name "Children's Waterfall" comes from a tragic legend. According to the tale, two children were left unattended at a nearby farm. They attempted to cross a natural stone bridge over the waterfall, but they fell into the raging waters and drowned. Distraught, their mother destroyed the bridge to prevent future tragedies. While the bridge is no longer there, the story adds a layer of somber beauty to the already impressive natural wonder. Visitors can enjoy several activities at Barnafoss. Well-maintained walking paths lead to various viewpoints, offering different perspectives of the waterfall and the surrounding landscape. The nearby Hraunfossar waterfalls, a series of smaller waterfalls emerging from beneath a lava field, are also easily accessible and worth exploring. There are no specific culinary traditions directly associated with Barnafoss itself, but the nearby Hotel Húsafell offers excellent dining options featuring local Icelandic cuisine.
