Möðrudalur Farm: Iceland's Highest Habited Farm, A Journey Back in Time Guide

Welcome to Möðrudalur, Iceland's highest inhabited farm, nestled in the breathtaking highlands. More than just a farm, it's a living museum, offering a glimpse into Iceland's rich agricultural heritage and the resilience of its people. Prepare to be captivated by the stark beauty of the surrounding landscape and the authentic charm of this remote settlement. Möðrudalur has been a family farm for generations, with roots stretching back centuries. The current buildings, including the distinctive turf church and houses, were largely constructed in the early 20th century. The family has painstakingly preserved the traditional farming practices and architecture, offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience a way of life that is rapidly disappearing. The turf church, in particular, is a testament to Icelandic ingenuity and resourcefulness, blending seamlessly with the surrounding environment. At Möðrudalur, you can explore the farm buildings, learn about traditional Icelandic farming techniques, and soak in the stunning views of the surrounding highlands. Hiking trails abound, offering opportunities to explore the rugged landscape and discover hidden waterfalls and panoramic vistas. Don't miss the chance to visit the turf church, a truly unique architectural marvel. While not a culinary destination in itself, the guesthouse and restaurant nearby (see separate entry) offer traditional Icelandic fare, often incorporating ingredients sourced directly from the farm.
