Ljótipollur Crater Lake Guide
Ljótipollur: The 'Ugly Puddle' That's Breathtakingly Beautiful Guide
Don't let the name fool you! Ljótipollur, meaning "Ugly Puddle," is anything but. This stunning explosion crater lake is a hidden gem in the Icelandic Highlands, boasting vibrant red slopes contrasting with the deep blue waters of the lake. The dramatic scenery makes Ljótipollur a photographer's paradise and a must-see destination for anyone exploring the Landmannalaugar region. Ljótipollur was formed during a volcanic eruption in 1477. The eruption created a maar crater, a type of volcanic crater formed by explosions caused by groundwater interacting with hot magma. Over time, the crater filled with water, creating the lake we see today. The red color of the crater slopes is due to the high iron content in the volcanic rock, which has oxidized over time. The primary activity at Ljótipollur is admiring the stunning scenery and taking photographs. A relatively easy hiking trail leads around the rim of the crater, offering panoramic views of the lake and the surrounding landscape. Fishing is also permitted in the lake with a valid permit. Pack a picnic and enjoy a relaxing lunch while soaking in the breathtaking views. While there are no specific culinary traditions associated with Ljótipollur, bringing along some Icelandic snacks like rúgbrauð (Icelandic rye bread) or hangikjöt (smoked lamb) can add a local touch to your experience.
Transportation
Ljótipollur is accessible by 4x4 vehicle via the F225 road. The road is unpaved and requires a vehicle with high clearance. From Landmannalaugar, drive north on the F225 for approximately 15-20 minutes. There is a parking area near the crater. Be sure to check road conditions before setting out, as the F225 can be closed due to weather or flooding. Alternatively, you can hike to Ljótipollur from Landmannalaugar, but this is a longer hike (approximately 3-4 hours each way). The trail is well-marked, but it's important to be prepared for changing weather conditions.
