This charming location is renowned for its incredibly accessible and abundant puffin colony, making it a must-visit destination for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. The island is easily reached by a well-maintained staircase and boardwalk, allowing visitors to get remarkably close to these adorable seabirds in their natural habitat. Hafnarhólmi has long been a significant nesting site for various seabird species, including puffins, kittiwakes, and fulmars. The local community has taken great care to protect the island and its birdlife, ensuring that visitors can enjoy the experience responsibly. The well-maintained infrastructure, including the staircase and viewing platforms, minimizes disturbance to the birds while providing excellent opportunities for observation and photography. The primary activity at Hafnarhólmi is, of course, birdwatching. Visitors can spend hours observing the puffins as they go about their daily lives, flying in and out of their burrows, fishing in the surrounding waters, and interacting with each other. The viewing platforms offer excellent vantage points, and the proximity to the birds is truly remarkable. Borgarfjörður Eystri, the nearby village, is known for its strong connection to elves and folklore. While not directly related to Hafnarhólmi, the village offers a unique cultural experience. The local restaurant, Álfacafe, offers traditional Icelandic cuisine, including fresh seafood and lamb dishes.
