Annoyed by the sound of the bells from the nearby Þingeyraklaustur monastery, the troll decided to destroy the monastery. However, he was too slow and as the sun rose, he was turned to stone, forever frozen in the sea. The name Hvítserkur translates to "white shirt" in Icelandic, referring to the white guano deposits that cover the rock. Visitors can admire Hvítserkur from the shore, especially during low tide when it's possible to walk closer to the rock. The area is also a great spot for birdwatching, as many seabirds nest on the cliffs. Transportation
Hvítserkur is located off Route 1 (the Ring Road) in northern Iceland. From Blönduós, take Route 711 north for approximately 20 kilometers. The road is gravel for the last few kilometers, so drive carefully. There is a parking area near the coast, from which you can walk to the viewpoint overlooking Hvítserkur.
