Karanambu Ranch Guide
Karanambu Ranch: Giant Otters and Rupununi Wonders Guide
Escape to the heart of the Rupununi Savannah at Karanambu Ranch, a unique eco-tourism destination in Guyana. This working cattle ranch, turned conservation haven, offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience the beauty and biodiversity of the South American rainforest and savannah. Karanambu is particularly famous for its work in rehabilitating orphaned giant otters, making it a must-visit for wildlife enthusiasts. Karanambu Ranch was established in the early 20th century as a cattle ranch. However, its focus shifted dramatically under the stewardship of Diane McTurk, a renowned conservationist. Diane dedicated her life to protecting the local wildlife, particularly the giant otters, and transformed the ranch into a sanctuary for these magnificent creatures. Her legacy continues today, with Karanambu serving as a vital research and conservation center. Visitors to Karanambu can enjoy a variety of activities, including boat trips on the Rupununi River to observe giant otters in their natural habitat, guided walks through the savannah and rainforest, birdwatching excursions, and cultural experiences with local Amerindian communities. The ranch also offers comfortable accommodations and delicious meals prepared with fresh, local ingredients. The Rupununi is known for its casareep, a bitter-sweet sauce made from cassava and used in pepperpot, Guyana's national dish. While at Karanambu, be sure to try local variations of Rupununi cuisine.
