The Georgetown Lighthouse, also known as the Demerara Lighthouse, is a prominent landmark in Georgetown, Guyana. Standing tall at the mouth of the Demerara River, this iconic structure has guided ships safely into port for over a century. However, due to its deteriorating condition, it was replaced by the current structure in 1830. Designed by the Dutch, the lighthouse is made of brick and stands approximately 103 feet (31 meters) tall. Its distinctive red and white stripes make it easily recognizable from afar. The lighthouse has played a crucial role in the development of Georgetown as a major trading port. Visitors can climb the winding staircase to the top of the lighthouse for unparalleled views. The climb can be a bit strenuous, but the reward is well worth the effort. From the top, you can see the sprawling cityscape of Georgetown, the muddy waters of the Demerara River flowing into the Atlantic Ocean, and the lush greenery of the surrounding countryside. Transportation
Taxis are the most convenient way to reach the Georgetown Lighthouse. You can easily hire a taxi from anywhere in Georgetown. Alternatively, you can take a minibus to the Kingston area and then walk a short distance to the lighthouse. Minibuses with the route number 40, 41, 42, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, and 49 pass through the area.
