Flores: Island Charm on Lake Petén Itzá Guide

Flores, a charming island town nestled on Lake Petén Itzá, serves as the gateway to the Mayan ruins of Tikal and Yaxha. With its colorful colonial architecture, cobblestone streets, and stunning lake views, Flores offers a delightful blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Whether you're exploring the town's quaint shops and restaurants, taking a boat trip on the lake, or simply relaxing and enjoying the laid-back atmosphere, Flores is a must-visit destination in Petén, Guatemala. Flores has a rich history dating back to the Mayan civilization. It was originally known as Tayasal, the last independent Mayan city to fall to the Spanish conquistadors in 1697. The island was a stronghold of the Itza Maya people, who resisted Spanish rule for centuries. After the Spanish conquest, Tayasal was renamed Flores and became an important trading post. Today, Flores retains its colonial charm, with its colorful buildings and narrow streets reflecting its Spanish heritage. Visitors to Flores can explore the town's central plaza, visit the local church, and browse the shops selling handicrafts and souvenirs. Take a boat trip on Lake Petén Itzá to explore the surrounding islands and enjoy the stunning scenery. Visit the nearby Ixpanpajul Natural Park for zip-lining, hiking, and birdwatching. Relax on the beach at El Remate, a small village on the eastern shore of the lake. Flores offers a variety of dining options, from traditional Guatemalan cuisine to international fare. Be sure to try the local specialties, such as pepian (a rich stew) and tamales.
