Disko Bay Guide
Disko Bay: Witness the Majesty of Icebergs Guide
Disko Bay, also known as Qeqertarsuup Tunua in Greenlandic, is a vast and breathtaking bay on the west coast of Greenland. It's renowned for its colossal icebergs, calving from the Jakobshavn Glacier (Sermeq Kujalleq), one of the most active glaciers in the world. These icebergs drift majestically through the bay, creating a surreal and unforgettable landscape. Disko Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its outstanding natural beauty and geological significance. The Jakobshavn Glacier has been a source of icebergs for millennia, shaping the landscape and influencing the climate of the region. The icebergs that break off from the glacier are carried by currents into Disko Bay, where they can remain for months or even years before melting or drifting out to sea. The sheer scale and variety of these icebergs, ranging from small chunks to towering mountains of ice, are a testament to the power of nature. The primary activity for tourists is boat tours to witness the icebergs up close. These tours offer incredible photo opportunities and a chance to see whales, seals, and other marine wildlife. Hiking along the coast provides stunning views of the bay and the icebergs. Kayaking among the icebergs (with experienced guides) is another popular option for adventurous travelers. While not directly related to the bay itself, Ilulissat offers opportunities to sample Greenlandic cuisine, including dishes made with seal, whale, and reindeer.
Transportation
Boat tours to Disko Bay depart regularly from the harbor in Ilulissat. The harbor is easily accessible on foot from most parts of town. Taxis are also available.
