Unearth the Past: Discover the Minoan Settlement of Azoria Guide
The Minoan settlement of Azoria is an important archaeological site located near Kavousi, close to Roussa Ekklisia in Crete. This site offers a fascinating glimpse into the Late Minoan IIIC and Early Iron Age periods (1200-700 BC), a time of significant transition in Cretan history. Exploring Azoria allows you to step back in time and imagine life in a thriving Minoan community. Azoria was founded around 1200 BC, after the collapse of the Minoan palaces. It represents a period of social and political reorganization in Crete. The site is characterized by its defensive location on a hilltop, reflecting the turbulent times. Excavations have revealed a complex urban plan, including houses, public buildings, and a communal dining hall. The discovery of olive presses and other agricultural installations indicates the importance of olive oil production to the settlement's economy. Visitors to Azoria can explore the excavated ruins of the settlement. While the site is not as visually impressive as some of the larger Minoan palaces, it offers a unique opportunity to understand the daily life of ordinary people during this period. Informational panels provide context and help to interpret the remains. The views from the hilltop are also spectacular. While there are no specific culinary traditions directly linked to the Azoria site, the nearby village of Kavousi offers traditional Cretan cuisine. Look for tavernas serving local specialties like olive oil-based dishes, fresh seafood, and local wines.
