Jewish Quarter Guide
A Journey Through History: Exploring the Jewish Quarter of Rhodes Guide
Step into a poignant chapter of Rhodes' history with a visit to the Jewish Quarter, known locally as "Juderia." This historic neighborhood, located within the Old Town, offers a powerful reminder of the vibrant Jewish community that thrived on the island for centuries. While much has changed, the echoes of their presence remain, creating a unique and moving experience for visitors. The Jewish community of Rhodes dates back to ancient times, with a significant influx of Sephardic Jews arriving after their expulsion from Spain in 1492. They established a thriving cultural and commercial center within the Old Town, contributing significantly to the island's economy and intellectual life. The Kahal Shalom Synagogue, built in 1577, stands as the oldest synagogue in Greece and a testament to the community's enduring faith. Tragically, the vast majority of the Jewish population of Rhodes was deported and murdered during the Holocaust in 1944. Today, the Jewish Quarter is a place of remembrance and reflection. Visit the Kahal Shalom Synagogue to learn about the history of the Jewish community and pay your respects at the memorial to the victims of the Holocaust. Wander through the narrow streets, admiring the traditional architecture and imagining the lives of those who once lived here. Several shops and restaurants in the area are owned by descendants of the original Jewish community, offering a chance to support their efforts to preserve their heritage. The Jewish Quarter is also home to a small Jewish Museum, which provides further insights into the community's history and culture.
