Therasia: Santorini's Untouched Sister Island Guide

Escape the crowds of Santorini and discover the tranquil beauty of Therasia, a small island just a short boat ride away. Offering stunning views of the caldera, traditional villages, and a slower pace of life, Therasia provides an authentic Greek island experience. Explore its charming settlements, hike its volcanic landscapes, and savor the local flavors away from the bustling tourist hotspots. Therasia shares a dramatic history with Santorini. Both islands were once part of a single landmass called Strongili, which was shattered by a massive volcanic eruption around 1600 BC. This cataclysmic event created the caldera that defines the region's unique geography. Unlike Santorini, Therasia has remained relatively untouched by mass tourism, preserving its traditional character and offering a glimpse into the past. Visitors to Therasia can enjoy a variety of activities. Explore the main village of Manolas, perched high on the caldera rim, and admire its colorful houses and panoramic views. Hike down to the harbor of Korfos and take a donkey ride up to Manolas (or walk if you're feeling energetic!). Visit the church of Agia Irini, which gave Santorini its name. Indulge in fresh seafood at the tavernas in Riva, the island's port. While Therasia doesn't have a distinct culinary tradition separate from Santorini, you'll find the same delicious Greek cuisine, often prepared with locally sourced ingredients.

Transportation

The primary way to reach Therasia is by boat from Santorini. Ferries and smaller boats depart regularly from the port of Athinios and Ammoudi Bay in Oia. From Oia, you can take a bus or taxi to Ammoudi Bay. From Athinios port, buses are available to Fira. Once on Therasia, local buses connect the main villages, but walking is a great way to explore the island.
