Upper Gate Guide
Ascend to History: The Upper Gate of Mystras Guide
Welcome to the Upper Gate of Mystras, your gateway to a breathtaking journey through time! This imposing entrance, perched high on the hillside, offers not only access to the upper reaches of this magnificent Byzantine city but also stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Prepare to be transported back centuries as you step through its ancient archway and begin your exploration of Mystras's rich history and architectural wonders. The Upper Gate, also known as the "Ano Porta," was strategically built to provide a secure entrance to the upper town of Mystras. Founded in the mid-13th century by William II of Villehardouin, Prince of Achaea, Mystras quickly became a vital Byzantine stronghold. Over the centuries, it served as the capital of the Despotate of Morea, a center of Byzantine culture and learning, before eventually falling to the Ottomans. The Upper Gate played a crucial role in the city's defense, offering a commanding vantage point and controlling access to the most fortified areas. As you pass through the Upper Gate, you'll find yourself immersed in the upper town, where you can explore the ruins of noble residences, churches adorned with faded frescoes, and the imposing Castle. Take your time to wander through the narrow streets, imagining life as it was centuries ago. Don't forget to pause and soak in the incredible views – the Upper Gate offers some of the best vistas in Mystras. While Mystras itself doesn't have a specific culinary tradition tied directly to the site, nearby Sparta offers traditional Greek cuisine. Look for local tavernas serving dishes like *souvlaki*, *moussaka*, and fresh seafood.
