Unleash Your Inner Explorer: Discover Thirassia's Hiking Trails Guide

Thirassia, the smaller sister island to Santorini, offers a unique and authentic Greek experience, far from the bustling crowds. One of the best ways to immerse yourself in its beauty is by exploring its network of hiking trails. These trails wind through volcanic landscapes, past traditional villages, and offer breathtaking panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and the iconic caldera. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a casual walker, Thirassia's trails provide an unforgettable adventure. The history of Thirassia is intertwined with that of Santorini. Both islands were once part of a single landmass before the massive volcanic eruption around 1600 BC that created the caldera. Thirassia remained largely untouched by the large-scale tourism that transformed Santorini, preserving its traditional way of life. Hiking the trails allows you to connect with this history, passing by old farmhouses, abandoned settlements, and ancient churches that whisper tales of the island's past. Hiking is the primary activity here! Several trails cater to different fitness levels. A popular route leads from the port of Riva up to the main village of Manolas, offering stunning views along the way. Another trail connects Manolas to the southern village of Agrilia, passing through vineyards and offering glimpses into the island's agricultural heritage. Remember to wear comfortable shoes, bring plenty of water, and protect yourself from the sun. While hiking, keep an eye out for local flora and fauna, including wildflowers and various bird species.

Transportation

Ferries regularly connect Santorini (Athinios port) to Thirassia (Riva port). From Riva, you can walk up to Manolas (the main village and starting point for many hikes) or take a local bus. Check the ferry schedules in advance, especially during the off-season.
