Balos Lagoon Guide

Balos Lagoon: Paradise Found in Crete Guide

Balos Lagoon, located near Kissamos in Crete, Greece, is a breathtaking natural wonder that will leave you speechless. Imagine crystal-clear turquoise waters, soft white sand, and a shallow lagoon perfect for wading and relaxing. This stunning landscape, often featured in postcards and travel brochures, is a must-see for anyone visiting Crete. The lagoon's unique beauty stems from the meeting of three seas – the Aegean, the Libyan, and the Ionian – creating a mesmerizing blend of colors and textures. While Balos doesn't have a rich historical narrative in the traditional sense, its geological formation is fascinating. The lagoon is formed by a sandbar connecting Crete to the small island of Tigani, creating a shallow, protected area. Over time, the constant movement of the sea and wind has sculpted the landscape into the stunning beauty we see today. The area is also a protected nature reserve, home to diverse flora and fauna, including rare bird species. Visitors to Balos can enjoy a variety of activities. Swimming and sunbathing are, of course, the most popular. The shallow waters are ideal for families with children. You can also explore the lagoon by walking along the sandbar to Tigani island, where you can hike to the Venetian castle ruins for panoramic views. Boat trips from Kissamos offer a convenient way to reach Balos, often including a stop at the nearby island of Gramvousa. While there aren't restaurants directly on Balos beach, boat trips usually include lunch or snacks. In Kissamos, you can find traditional Cretan cuisine, known for its fresh seafood, olive oil, and local cheeses. Try dishes like Dakos (barley rusk topped with tomatoes and cheese) or fresh grilled fish.

Transportation

The most common way to reach Balos is by boat from Kissamos port. Several companies offer daily cruises. Alternatively, you can drive to a parking area near the lagoon and then walk down a dirt road (approximately 30-45 minutes). Be aware that the road is unpaved and can be challenging for some vehicles. During peak season, the road can get very crowded. There is also a bus from Kissamos to Kaliviani, the village closest to the Balos access road. From Kaliviani, you'll need to walk or take a taxi to the parking area.
