Old Fortress Guide
A Timeless Guardian: Discover the Old Fortress of Corfu Guide
The Old Fortress, also known as the Paleo Frourio, is a prominent landmark of Corfu Town, standing proudly on a rocky peninsula jutting into the Ionian Sea. Originally a Byzantine castle, it was significantly fortified by the Venetians starting in the 15th century, transforming it into a formidable defensive structure. Its rich history, stunning architecture, and panoramic views make it a must-see attraction for any visitor to Corfu. The site of the Old Fortress has been fortified since Byzantine times, but its current form largely reflects the Venetian influence. The Venetians strengthened the existing fortifications and created a moat, the Contrafossa, separating the fortress from the rest of the town. A drawbridge provided access to the fortress. The fortress played a vital role in defending Corfu against numerous sieges, including the Great Siege of 1716, where it successfully repelled a massive Ottoman invasion. Visitors can explore the fortress's ramparts, towers, and churches, including the Church of St. George, built in the style of a Doric temple. The views from the top of the fortress are spectacular, offering panoramic vistas of Corfu Town, the sea, and the surrounding coastline. The fortress also hosts cultural events and performances throughout the year. While there are no specific culinary traditions within the fortress itself, the nearby streets of Corfu Town offer a wide array of dining options, from traditional tavernas to modern restaurants.
