Samaria Gorge Guide
Samaria Gorge: Trek Through Crete's Natural Wonder Guide
Embark on an unforgettable adventure through the Samaria Gorge, one of Europe's longest and most spectacular gorges. Located in southwest Crete, this natural wonder offers a challenging yet rewarding hike through stunning landscapes, diverse flora and fauna, and a unique glimpse into the island's geological history. The gorge is a protected national park, preserving its natural beauty and ecological significance. The Samaria Gorge was formed over millions of years by the river Tarraios, which carved its way through the White Mountains (Lefka Ori). The gorge has played a role in Cretan history, serving as a refuge for locals during times of conflict. The abandoned village of Samaria, located within the gorge, stands as a testament to the area's past. The gorge's narrowest point, known as the "Gates" or "Iron Gates," is a breathtaking passage where the cliffs rise dramatically on either side, creating a truly awe-inspiring experience. The hike through the Samaria Gorge is approximately 16 kilometers long and takes around 5-7 hours to complete, depending on your fitness level. The trail descends from the Omalos plateau (Xyloskalo) to the coastal village of Agia Roumeli. Along the way, you'll encounter diverse landscapes, from dense forests to rocky terrain, and have the chance to spot the Kri-Kri, the wild goat of Crete. At the end of the hike, you can relax on the beach in Agia Roumeli and take a ferry to either Chora Sfakion or Sougia to return to your starting point.
Transportation
The most common way to access the Samaria Gorge is by bus from Chania to Omalos (Xyloskalo), the starting point of the hike. Several bus companies offer daily services during the hiking season (May to October). After completing the hike, you'll arrive in Agia Roumeli. From there, you can take a ferry to either Chora Sfakion or Sougia. Buses are available from both Chora Sfakion and Sougia back to Chania. It's recommended to book your bus and ferry tickets in advance, especially during peak season.
