This peaceful and atmospheric burial ground offers a glimpse into the lives of the islanders who shaped Spiekeroog's unique identity. Wander among the weathered headstones and reflect on the stories they hold. It's a place of quiet contemplation and a reminder of the island's rich maritime heritage. The Alter Friedhof dates back to the 17th century and served as the island's primary burial ground for centuries. Many of the graves belong to sailors and their families, reflecting Spiekeroog's long-standing connection to the sea. The headstones, often adorned with maritime symbols, provide valuable insights into the island's history and culture. The cemetery's location, nestled among the dunes, adds to its serene and evocative atmosphere. Visiting the Alter Friedhof is primarily an opportunity for quiet reflection and historical exploration. Take your time to read the inscriptions on the headstones and imagine the lives of those who are buried here. The cemetery is open to the public and is free to enter. While there isn't a culinary tradition directly associated with the cemetery, consider visiting a local bakery afterwards to sample traditional East Frisian pastries, a fitting way to honor the island's heritage.
