Schöner Brunnen (Beautiful Fountain) Guide
Schöner Brunnen: Spin the Rings for Good Luck! Guide
The Schöner Brunnen, or Beautiful Fountain, is a stunning 14th-century landmark located in Nuremberg's Hauptmarkt (main market square). More than just a pretty fountain, it's a masterpiece of Gothic art and a symbol of the city. Adorned with forty colorful figures representing a worldview of the Holy Roman Empire, from prophets and evangelists to electors and heroes, the Schöner Brunnen is a must-see for any visitor to Nuremberg. The fountain was built between 1385 and 1396 by Heinrich Beheim. Its intricate iron grating, added later, contains a seamless golden ring. Legend has it that spinning this ring three times will grant you a wish. Another version of the legend says that spinning the ring brings good luck. The fountain was almost lost during World War II, but it was protected by a concrete shell. Visitors can admire the intricate details of the fountain's sculptures and learn about the historical figures they represent. Of course, spinning the golden ring is a must! The Hauptmarkt itself is a vibrant hub of activity, with vendors selling local crafts, food, and souvenirs. Nuremberg is famous for its Lebkuchen (gingerbread) and Nürnberger Bratwürste (small grilled sausages). You can find these culinary delights at the market or in nearby restaurants. Be sure to try them for an authentic taste of Nuremberg.
