Mühlenhof Open-Air Museum Guide

Step Back in Time: Experience Rural Westphalia at Mühlenhof! Guide

Escape the hustle and bustle of modern life and journey into the past at the Mühlenhof Open-Air Museum! Nestled on the picturesque shores of the Aasee lake in Münster, this living museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the rural life of Westphalia over the past centuries. Wander through meticulously reconstructed farmhouses, workshops, and windmills, and immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and smells of a bygone era. It's a perfect destination for families, history buffs, and anyone seeking a unique and engaging cultural experience. The Mühlenhof's history began in 1961 with the relocation of a historic windmill to the site. Over the years, more than 30 buildings from the Münsterland region were carefully dismantled, transported, and rebuilt here, creating an authentic village setting. These aren't just static displays; many buildings are brought to life by costumed interpreters who demonstrate traditional crafts and farming techniques. You'll witness blacksmiths forging iron, bakers preparing bread in wood-fired ovens, and farmers tending to their animals. A visit to the Mühlenhof is more than just a walk through history; it's an interactive experience. Participate in workshops to learn traditional crafts, sample freshly baked goods, or simply enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of the village. Children will love exploring the farm animals, playing in the open spaces, and discovering the secrets of rural life. Don't miss the opportunity to try some traditional Westphalian cuisine at the museum's restaurant, offering hearty dishes made with local ingredients. The "Pumpernickel" bread is a must-try, a dark, dense rye bread that's a regional specialty.
