Old Bridge (Karl Theodor Bridge) Guide
Iconic Heidelberg: Cross the Old Bridge and Touch the Monkey Guide
The Old Bridge, officially known as the Karl Theodor Bridge, is one of Heidelberg's most iconic landmarks. Spanning the Neckar River, this sandstone bridge offers breathtaking views of the Heidelberg Castle, the Old Town, and the surrounding hills. It's a must-see for any visitor to Heidelberg, providing a perfect photo opportunity and a glimpse into the city's rich history. The first bridge on this site was built in the 13th century, but it was repeatedly destroyed by floods and wars. The current bridge was constructed in the late 18th century by Prince Elector Karl Theodor, hence its official name. The bridge features a gate tower on the Old Town side, adorned with sculptures and inscriptions. The famous Heidelberg Bridge Monkey statue stands at the southern end of the bridge, a popular spot for tourists to touch for good luck. Walk across the bridge and admire the stunning views of Heidelberg Castle and the Neckar River. Take a photo with the Heidelberg Bridge Monkey and learn about the legends surrounding it. Explore the gate tower and read the inscriptions that tell the story of the bridge's construction. From the bridge, you can also access the Philosophenweg (Philosopher's Walk) on the opposite bank of the river, offering even more panoramic views.
Transportation
The Old Bridge is easily accessible on foot from the Old Town (Altstadt). Tram lines 21, 22, 23, 24, and 26 stop near the Old Town, at stops like 'Rathaus/Bergbahn' or 'Marktplatz', from which you can easily walk to the bridge.
