The Old Bridge, or Alte Brücke, in Heidelberg is a historic sandstone bridge that spans the Neckar River, connecting the old city with the eastern bank. The first bridge on this site was built in the Middle Ages, but it was repeatedly destroyed by floods and wars. The current sandstone bridge was constructed between 1788 and 1793 by Elector Carl Theodor. The bridge features a medieval gate tower on the old city side, which once formed part of the city's fortifications. The bridge also features a bronze statue of a monkey, a popular photo opportunity for tourists. Walking across the Old Bridge offers stunning views of Heidelberg Castle, the Neckar River, and the surrounding hills. Visitors can rub the bronze monkey statue for good luck and throw coins into the river. The bridge is a popular spot for taking photos and enjoying the atmosphere of Heidelberg. From the bridge, you can easily access the Philosophenweg (Philosopher's Walk) on the opposite bank, which offers panoramic views of the city. Transportation
The Old Bridge is easily accessible on foot from the Altstadt (Old Town). Several bus lines also stop near the bridge, including lines 31, 32, 33, and 35. Get off at the 'Alte Brücke' stop.
