The history of Herrenhausen Gardens dates back to the 17th century when Duchess Sophie of Hanover began transforming a simple kitchen garden into a magnificent baroque masterpiece. Inspired by the gardens of Versailles, she envisioned a space that would reflect the power and sophistication of the Hanoverian court. Over the centuries, the gardens have undergone various transformations, but they have always retained their original baroque design. The Great Garden, in particular, is renowned for its perfectly symmetrical layout, its grand parterres, and its impressive water features. Visitors to Herrenhausen Gardens can enjoy a variety of activities. Stroll through the Great Garden and admire the intricate flowerbeds and the impressive Grand Fountain, which can shoot water up to 80 meters high. Explore the Berggarten, a botanical garden with a diverse collection of plants from around the world. Take a relaxing walk through the Georgengarten, an English landscape garden with picturesque lakes and meadows. Attend one of the many events that take place in the gardens throughout the year, such as concerts, theater performances, and fireworks displays. While there isn't a specific culinary tradition tied directly to the gardens, Hanover itself is known for its hearty cuisine, including dishes like Calenberger Pfannenschlag (a type of pancake) and Welfenspeise (a dessert).
