Römerberg: Frankfurt's Historic Heartbeat Guide
The Römerberg is the heart of Frankfurt's Altstadt (Old Town), a picturesque public square steeped in history and surrounded by charming half-timbered houses. It's a must-see for any visitor to Frankfurt, offering a glimpse into the city's rich past and vibrant present. The square is a popular gathering place for locals and tourists alike, hosting festivals, markets, and other events throughout the year. The Römerberg has been Frankfurt's city center since the 9th century. It served as the site of imperial elections and coronations for centuries, solidifying its importance in German history. The Römer, a complex of nine houses, has served as Frankfurt's city hall since the 15th century. The square was heavily damaged during World War II but has been painstakingly reconstructed, preserving its historical character and architectural beauty. Visitors to the Römerberg can admire the iconic Römer building, climb the tower of St. Nicholas Church for panoramic views, and visit the Justice Fountain (Justitiabrunnen). Explore the surrounding streets filled with shops, restaurants, and museums. During the Christmas season, the Römerberg transforms into a magical Christmas market, one of the largest and most beautiful in Germany. Frankfurt is known for its "Grüne Soße" (green sauce), a herb-based sauce served with potatoes and eggs. Be sure to try it at a traditional restaurant in the area. Also sample "Frankfurter Würstchen," a type of sausage that originated in Frankfurt.
