Eiserner Steg Guide
Walk the Iron Footbridge: A Frankfurt Icon Guide
The Eiserner Steg, or Iron Footbridge, is a pedestrian bridge spanning the Main River in Frankfurt, Germany. It's a beloved landmark offering stunning panoramic views of the city skyline, including the Römerberg, the Frankfurt Cathedral, and the modern skyscrapers that define the city's financial district. More than just a crossing, it's a symbol of Frankfurt's connection between its past and present, and a popular spot for both locals and tourists alike. Originally built in 1868, the Eiserner Steg was a privately funded project designed to improve pedestrian access between the city center and Sachsenhausen. It was rebuilt twice, once after being destroyed in World War II and again in the 1990s to reinforce its structure. The bridge is adorned with thousands of "love locks" attached by couples as a symbol of their affection, adding a romantic touch to its industrial design. The bridge also features a quote from Homer's Odyssey in Greek letters, translated as "Sailing over the wine-dark sea to men of strange speech." Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll across the bridge, taking in the breathtaking views and snapping photos. It's especially beautiful at sunset when the city lights begin to twinkle. Many people enjoy attaching their own love locks to the bridge (though this is officially discouraged). From the Sachsenhausen side, you can easily access the Museumsufer, a collection of museums along the riverbank. The bridge also provides a direct route to the heart of Frankfurt's old town. Frankfurt's culinary scene is diverse, but be sure to try "Apfelwein" (apple wine), a local specialty, at one of the traditional taverns in Sachsenhausen after your walk.
Transportation
The Eiserner Steg is easily accessible by public transportation. You can take the U-Bahn (subway) lines U4 or U5 to the Dom/Römer station, which is a short walk from the bridge. Alternatively, you can take tram lines 11, 12, 14, 17, or 18 to the Römer/Paulskirche stop. Several bus lines also stop nearby, including lines 30, 36, and N8.
