Escape to the Kellerswald: Forchheim's Unique Cellar Forest Guide

Discover a hidden gem just outside Forchheim's city center: the Kellerswald, or cellar forest. This unique area is not a forest in the traditional sense, but rather a network of centuries-old beer cellars carved into the hillside. These cellars were originally built to keep beer cool during the summer months, and today, many of them are still in operation, offering visitors a chance to sample local brews in a truly unique setting. The Kellerswald is a must-visit for anyone seeking an authentic Franconian experience. The history of the Kellerswald is intertwined with the history of brewing in Forchheim. The cellars were built by local breweries to store their beer at a consistent temperature, ensuring its quality and longevity. Over time, the area around the cellars became a popular gathering place, and eventually, beer gardens and restaurants sprung up, creating the vibrant atmosphere that exists today. The Kellerswald is a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of Franconian brewers. A visit to the Kellerswald offers a variety of activities. Of course, sampling the local beer is a must! Each cellar offers its own unique brews, often served directly from the barrel. Many cellars also offer traditional Franconian food, such as Schäufele (pork shoulder), Bratwurst, and Brezen (pretzels). Beyond the food and drink, the Kellerswald is a great place to relax and enjoy the natural surroundings. Take a stroll through the wooded area, admire the architecture of the cellars, and soak up the atmosphere. During Annafest, the Kellerswald transforms into the heart of the festival, with live music, carnival rides, and a lively atmosphere that's not to be missed.
