Burgberg Guide
Burgberg: Erlangen's Panoramic Playground Guide
Escape the city bustle and ascend to Burgberg, Erlangen's beloved hilltop retreat! Offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city and surrounding Franconian countryside, Burgberg is more than just a pretty vista. It's a place to relax, explore, and immerse yourself in local tradition. Whether you're a history buff, a nature lover, or simply seeking a tranquil escape, Burgberg promises a memorable experience. The history of Burgberg is intertwined with Erlangen's own. Originally a medieval fortification, the Burgberg's strategic location made it a vital defensive point. While the original castle no longer stands, remnants of its past can still be seen in the historic cellars, now used for beer storage. The Bergkirchweih, Erlangen's famous beer festival, has its roots in the Burgberg, evolving from a church consecration celebration into the massive event it is today. The cellars themselves, carved into the sandstone, provide naturally cool storage, perfect for lagering beer. A visit to Burgberg offers a variety of activities. Explore the network of walking trails that wind through the wooded hillside, offering stunning viewpoints at every turn. Descend into the historic beer cellars (Kellerwald) and sample local Franconian beers directly from the source. During the Bergkirchweih (usually late May/early June), the Burgberg transforms into a vibrant festival ground, filled with beer tents, food stalls, and live music. Even outside the festival, the beer gardens offer a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy a drink and a traditional Franconian meal. Speaking of culinary traditions, be sure to try a "Brotzeit" – a hearty platter of local cheeses, sausages, and bread – the perfect accompaniment to your beer.
