Attraction Guide: Petit Trianon, Versailles, France

Petit Trianon Guide

Escape the Grandeur: Discover Marie Antoinette's Private Paradise Guide

Step away from the opulent Palace of Versailles and discover the Petit Trianon, a charming and intimate chateau nestled within the palace grounds. This neoclassical gem offers a glimpse into the private world of Marie Antoinette, providing a stark contrast to the formal grandeur of the main palace. Explore its elegant interiors, wander through its enchanting gardens, and imagine life as the queen sought respite from the pressures of court. Commissioned by Louis XV for his mistress, Madame de Pompadour, the Petit Trianon was later gifted to Marie Antoinette by Louis XVI. She transformed it into her personal sanctuary, a place where she could escape the rigid etiquette of Versailles and indulge in her own tastes and interests. The surrounding gardens, including the English Garden and the Queen's Hamlet (Hameau de la Reine), reflect her desire for a more natural and informal setting. The Queen's Hamlet, a rustic village with farm buildings, allowed her to experience a simplified, idealized version of rural life. Visitors can explore the Petit Trianon's beautifully restored rooms, imagining Marie Antoinette receiving guests or enjoying musical performances. Stroll through the meticulously maintained French Garden, admire the Temple of Love, and discover the charming Queen's Hamlet. The Petit Trianon offers a unique perspective on the life of Marie Antoinette and provides a peaceful retreat from the crowds of Versailles. While in Versailles, be sure to sample some classic French pastries like macarons or éclairs at a local patisserie.
