La Rhune Train Guide
Ascend to New Heights: La Rhune Train Adventure Guide
Embark on a nostalgic journey to the summit of La Rhune, a legendary mountain straddling the border between France and Spain, aboard the charming La Rhune Train. This cog railway, a relic of a bygone era, offers a unique and unforgettable experience, transporting you through stunning landscapes to panoramic views that will leave you breathless. It's more than just a train ride; it's a step back in time and a gateway to the beauty of the Basque Country. The La Rhune Train has been carrying passengers to the summit since 1924. The idea for the railway was conceived in the late 19th century, driven by the desire to make the spectacular views from La Rhune accessible to a wider audience. The construction was a feat of engineering, overcoming the steep slopes and challenging terrain. Over the years, the train has become an iconic symbol of the region, attracting visitors from around the world. The main activity is, of course, the train ride itself! As you ascend, keep your eyes peeled for the Pottok ponies and sheep that roam freely on the mountainside. At the summit, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking 360-degree views of the Atlantic coast, the Pyrenees Mountains, and the rolling hills of the Basque Country. There are also several ventas (small shops) at the top where you can purchase souvenirs and enjoy local snacks. While the summit offers basic refreshments, the villages at the base of La Rhune boast a rich culinary heritage. Sample traditional Basque dishes like Axoa (veal stew) and Gateau Basque (almond cake) for a true taste of the region.
