The history of Mont Saint-Michel dates back to the 8th century when a sanctuary was built on the island following a vision of the Archangel Michael. Over the centuries, the abbey evolved from a simple chapel into a magnificent Benedictine monastery, becoming a major pilgrimage site during the Middle Ages. Its strategic location also made it a formidable fortress, playing a crucial role in defending Normandy against invaders. The abbey has withstood sieges, fires, and revolutions, its enduring presence a symbol of resilience and spiritual power. Visitors can explore the abbey's various levels, from the Romanesque church at the summit to the Gothic cloisters and refectory. Guided tours are available to learn about the abbey's history, architecture, and religious significance. Be sure to walk along the ramparts for stunning panoramic views of the surrounding bay. The village at the foot of the abbey offers a variety of shops, restaurants, and hotels. The unique tidal phenomenon, where the island is sometimes surrounded by water and sometimes accessible by land, adds to the magic of the Mont Saint-Michel experience. The area is known for its delicious seafood, especially mussels (moules) prepared in various ways. Try the local cider as well.
