The Maternité Suisse d'Elne, or Swiss Maternity of Elne, stands as a poignant reminder of compassion and resilience during the dark days of World War II. This former maternity hospital, founded by Swiss nurse Elisabeth Eidenbenz, provided refuge and care for pregnant women and their children, primarily Jewish refugees and those fleeing the Spanish Civil War. Despite facing immense challenges, including limited resources and constant threat from the occupying forces, Eidenbenz and her team provided a safe haven for over 600 women and helped deliver nearly 600 babies. The Maternité Suisse d'Elne is located just outside the main town of Elne. From the town center, follow the signs directing you to the Maternité. It's approximately a 15-20 minute walk. Alternatively, you can take a taxi from Elne. If driving, there is parking available on site.
