Little Venice (La Petite Venise) Guide
Little Venice: A Fairytale Escape in the Heart of Colmar Guide
Welcome to La Petite Venise, or Little Venice, Colmar's most enchanting and photographed district. This picturesque area, crisscrossed by canals and lined with colorful half-timbered houses, evokes a sense of fairytale charm. Imagine gliding along the waterways in a traditional flat-bottomed boat, admiring the reflections of the vibrant buildings in the water, and soaking in the romantic atmosphere. Little Venice is a must-see destination for anyone visiting Colmar. The name "Little Venice" originated from the area's resemblance to the famous Italian city. The canals were originally used for transporting goods, particularly produce from the surrounding vineyards and gardens. The houses that line the canals were once home to fishermen, gardeners, and tanners, each contributing to the area's unique character. Today, Little Venice retains its historical charm and serves as a reminder of Colmar's connection to the water. A boat tour is the quintessential activity in Little Venice, offering a unique perspective of the area's beauty. You can also explore the district on foot, wandering along the canals and admiring the colorful houses. Many restaurants and cafes line the waterways, providing opportunities to savor Alsatian cuisine while enjoying the scenic views. Be sure to try local specialties like *baeckeoffe* (a traditional Alsatian stew) or *kougelhopf* (a sweet brioche cake). The area is particularly magical during the Christmas season when the houses are adorned with festive lights and decorations.
