Conquer the Roc: A Breathtaking Hike Above Castellane Guide

The Sentier du Roc, or Roc Trail, is a challenging but rewarding hike that leads to the summit of the iconic Roc de Castellane, the towering rock formation that dominates the town's skyline. This trail offers stunning panoramic views of Castellane, the Verdon Valley, and the surrounding mountains. It's a must-do for adventurous hikers seeking an unforgettable experience. The Roc de Castellane has been a strategic site for centuries, serving as a natural fortress and lookout point. In the Middle Ages, a castle was built on its summit, providing protection for the town below. While the castle is now in ruins, the chapel of Notre-Dame du Roc still stands, a testament to the site's enduring religious significance. The trail itself has been maintained and improved over the years, making it accessible to experienced hikers. The primary activity on the Sentier du Roc is, of course, hiking! The trail is steep and rocky in places, requiring good physical fitness and appropriate footwear. Allow at least 2-3 hours for the round trip. Along the way, you'll encounter stunning viewpoints, offering opportunities to take photos and admire the scenery. At the summit, you can explore the ruins of the castle, visit the chapel of Notre-Dame du Roc, and soak in the breathtaking panoramic views. While there are no specific culinary traditions directly associated with the trail, be sure to pack plenty of water and snacks to fuel your hike. Consider enjoying a celebratory meal at one of Castellane's restaurants after your descent.
