Le Suquet Guide
Le Suquet: Cannes' Charming Old Town with Breathtaking Views Guide
Escape the glitz and glamour of the Croisette and discover the authentic charm of Le Suquet, the old town of Cannes. Perched on a hill overlooking the city and the Mediterranean Sea, Le Suquet offers a delightful contrast to the modern bustle below. With its narrow cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and panoramic views, Le Suquet is a must-visit for anyone seeking a taste of Cannes' rich history and culture. Le Suquet's history dates back to the Roman era, but it truly flourished in the Middle Ages. The area was fortified to protect against invaders, and the Tour du Masque, a medieval tower, still stands as a testament to this period. Over the centuries, Le Suquet remained the heart of Cannes, with its fishing port and vibrant marketplace. Today, it is a protected historical district, preserving its unique character and architectural heritage. Explore the winding streets of Le Suquet, discover hidden squares, and admire the colorful buildings. Visit the Musée de la Castre, housed in a medieval castle, to learn about the history of Cannes and see a collection of art and artifacts. Climb to the top of the Tour du Masque for breathtaking views of the city, the coastline, and the Lérins Islands. The Église Notre-Dame d'Espérance, a 16th-century church, is another notable landmark. Le Suquet is also home to a variety of restaurants and cafes, offering traditional Provençal cuisine. Be sure to try local specialties such as bouillabaisse, socca (a chickpea pancake), and ratatouille.
Transportation
Le Suquet is best explored on foot due to its narrow, winding streets. From the Croisette, you can walk up the hill to Le Suquet. Alternatively, you can take bus number 1 or 2 from the city center to the foot of the hill and then walk up. The bus stop is called 'Hôtel de Ville'.
