Wellington Quarry Guide
The Carrière Wellington: A Journey into the Depths of WWI History Guide
Descend into the depths of the Carrière Wellington, a former chalk quarry transformed into a secret underground network during World War I. This unique historical site offers a poignant and immersive experience, allowing visitors to walk in the footsteps of the soldiers who prepared for the Battle of Arras in 1917. Prepare to be moved by the stories of courage, sacrifice, and the harsh realities of trench warfare. The Carrière Wellington played a crucial role in the Battle of Arras. New Zealand tunneling companies secretly excavated and expanded the existing chalk quarries, creating a network of tunnels that could house thousands of soldiers, complete with living quarters, a hospital, and even a light railway. These tunnels allowed the Allied forces to launch a surprise attack on the German lines, bypassing the heavily fortified trenches. The name "Wellington" was chosen to honor the Duke of Wellington, a British military hero. A visit to the Carrière Wellington is a powerful and emotional experience. Visitors descend into the tunnels via a lift and are guided through the network by audio guides, which feature the voices of soldiers who were stationed there. The tunnels have been preserved to resemble their wartime state, with graffiti, equipment, and other artifacts providing a glimpse into the lives of the men who lived and fought underground. The experience culminates in a moving tribute to the soldiers who lost their lives in the Battle of Arras. While not directly related to the quarry, Arras is known for its andouillette, a type of sausage, and its delicious pastries.
