Korvatunturi: Discover the Home of Santa Claus! Guide
Welcome to Korvatunturi, a fell on the border between Finland and Russia, and according to Finnish folklore, the true home of Santa Claus! While the exact location is kept secret to protect Santa's privacy, the surrounding area offers a magical experience for visitors of all ages. Imagine yourself in a pristine winter wonderland, where the spirit of Christmas lives year-round. The legend of Korvatunturi as Santa's home began to solidify in the 1920s. It's said that the fell's unique shape, resembling rabbit ears ("korva" means ear in Finnish), allows Santa to hear the wishes of children all over the world. While the fell itself is off-limits to the public, the surrounding region embraces the Santa Claus theme, offering various activities and attractions that capture the festive spirit. While you can't visit Santa's actual workshop, you can experience the magic of Lapland. Enjoy snowmobiling through the snowy landscapes, go reindeer sledding, or try your hand at ice fishing. Many local tour operators offer guided excursions that include storytelling about Santa Claus and the folklore surrounding Korvatunturi. Indulge in traditional Lappish cuisine, such as reindeer stew and smoked salmon, and warm up with a cup of hot glögi (mulled wine).
