Kultaranta: Presidential Grandeur and Gardens Guide
Welcome to Kultaranta, the summer residence of the President of Finland, located in the beautiful coastal town of Naantali. This impressive granite castle, surrounded by meticulously maintained gardens, offers a glimpse into the life of the Finnish head of state and the nation's history. While the castle itself is not always open to the public, the stunning gardens are a major draw, providing a tranquil escape and a chance to admire the artistry of landscape design. Kultaranta's history began in 1916 when it was built for businessman Alfred Kordelin. After Kordelin's death in 1917, the estate was acquired by the Finnish state in 1922 and designated as the official summer residence of the President. The main building, designed by architect Uno Ullberg, reflects a neo-classical style with influences of Art Nouveau. Over the years, it has hosted numerous dignitaries and played a significant role in Finnish political life. Visitors can explore the expansive gardens, which include a formal flower garden, an English-style park, and a rose garden boasting hundreds of varieties. Guided tours of the gardens are available during the summer months, offering insights into the history and design of the estate. While inside the castle is rarely accessible, the exterior architecture and the surrounding landscape provide ample opportunities for photography and appreciation of Finnish heritage.
Transportation
Bus lines 6 and 7 from Turku to Naantali stop near Kultaranta. From the Naantali bus station, it's approximately a 20-minute walk. Alternatively, you can take a taxi from Naantali center.
