Suomenlinna Guide
Explore a Sea Fortress: History and Beauty at Suomenlinna Guide
Welcome to Suomenlinna, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Finland's most popular attractions. This magnificent sea fortress, spread across several islands at the entrance to Helsinki harbor, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, stunning views of the Baltic Sea, and a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Whether you're a history buff, a nature lover, or simply looking for a memorable day trip, Suomenlinna has something to offer everyone. Suomenlinna's history dates back to the mid-18th century when it was built by Sweden to defend against Russian expansion. Originally named Sveaborg (Swedish for "Fortress of Svea"), it was one of the largest sea fortresses in the world. In 1808, the fortress fell to Russia, and it remained under Russian control until Finland gained independence in 1917. The fortress then became part of the Finnish Defence Forces and was renamed Suomenlinna ("Castle of Finland"). Throughout its history, Suomenlinna has played a crucial role in shaping the region's political landscape. Today, Suomenlinna offers a variety of activities for tourists. Explore the historic ramparts, museums, and tunnels. Take a guided tour to learn more about the fortress's rich history. Enjoy a picnic on the grassy slopes, or relax on one of the beaches. Visit the Suomenlinna Church, which also serves as a lighthouse. Several restaurants and cafes offer traditional Finnish cuisine, including fresh seafood and hearty stews. During the summer months, you can also attend open-air theatre performances and concerts.
Transportation
The only way to reach Suomenlinna is by ferry. Ferries depart from Market Square (Kauppatori) in Helsinki. The HSL ferry (public transport) runs frequently throughout the year. You can use your Helsinki public transport ticket on this ferry. Alternatively, a private ferry operator also provides service.
Ticket Price
Ferry ticket required. Suomenlinna itself is free to enter, but some museums and attractions within the fortress may have admission fees.
