Suomenlinna: Explore a Historic Island Fortress Guide

Suomenlinna's history dates back to the mid-18th century when it was built by Sweden to defend against Russian expansion. Originally named Sveaborg (Swedish Castle), it was one of the largest sea fortresses in the world. In 1808, the fortress fell to Russia, and it remained under Russian control until Finland gained independence in 1917. Throughout its history, Suomenlinna has served as a military base, a prison, and a naval academy. Today, it's a vibrant community with residents, shops, and cultural events. A visit to Suomenlinna offers a variety of activities. Explore the fortress walls and tunnels, visit the Suomenlinna Museum to learn about its history, or take a guided tour. You can also visit the Ehrensvärd Museum, which showcases the life of the fortress's founder, or the Military Museum's Manege, which displays military equipment. Enjoy a picnic on the ramparts, relax on the beach, or dine at one of the island's restaurants. The island also has its own brewery, offering locally crafted beers.
