Stele of Axum Guide
Axum's Silent Giants: Standing Tall Through Time Guide
The Stele of Axum is a towering testament to the ancient Axumite Kingdom, a powerful civilization that ruled the region from around the 1st to the 7th centuries AD. These monolithic obelisks, carved from single blocks of stone, served as grave markers and monuments to the kings and nobles of Axum. Visiting the Stele Park is like stepping back in time, offering a glimpse into the grandeur and sophistication of this once-great empire. Prepare to be awestruck by the sheer scale and intricate carvings of these ancient structures. The largest stele, known as the Great Stele, once stood at an impressive 33 meters (108 feet) tall but collapsed, breaking into several pieces. The second largest, the Obelisk of Axum, was looted by Italian forces in 1937 and taken to Rome. After decades of diplomatic efforts, it was finally returned to Ethiopia in 2005 and re-erected in 2008. These stelae are not just impressive feats of engineering; they are also adorned with symbolic carvings that provide valuable insights into Axumite culture, religion, and social hierarchy. Tourists can explore the Stele Park, marveling at the remaining stelae and the fragments of the Great Stele. Guided tours are available to provide historical context and explain the significance of the carvings. Photography is permitted, allowing you to capture the majesty of these ancient monuments. While in Axum, be sure to also visit other historical sites, such as the tombs of King Kaleb and King Gebre Meskel, and the ruins of Dungur Palace, to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the Axumite civilization. While Axum doesn't have a unique culinary tradition distinct from Ethiopian cuisine, be sure to enjoy local Ethiopian dishes like injera (a sourdough flatbread) with various stews and flavorful sauces.
