Valley of the Queens Guide
Royal Resting Place: Explore the Valley of the Queens Guide
The Valley of the Queens, also known as Ta-Set-Neferu ("The Place of Beauty"), is an ancient necropolis located near Luxor, Egypt. It served as the burial site for the wives, daughters, and sons of pharaohs, primarily from the New Kingdom period (1550-1070 BC). While not as grand as the Valley of the Kings, it holds its own unique charm and historical significance, offering a glimpse into the lives of royal women and children. The Valley of the Queens gained prominence during the reign of Ramesses I, the founder of the 19th Dynasty. It became the primary burial site for royal women and children, although some pharaohs' sons were also interred here. The most famous tomb in the Valley is that of Nefertari, the beloved wife of Ramesses II. Her tomb is renowned for its exceptionally well-preserved and vibrant wall paintings, considered some of the finest examples of ancient Egyptian art. A visit to the Valley of the Queens allows you to explore the tombs of royal women and children, including the magnificent tomb of Nefertari (separate ticket required and often limited access due to preservation efforts). Admire the intricate wall paintings depicting scenes from Egyptian mythology and the afterlife. While smaller than the tombs in the Valley of the Kings, they offer a more intimate and personal glimpse into the lives of the royal family. Remember to check the availability of Nefertari's tomb in advance, as access is often restricted.
