Philae Temple Guide
Island Sanctuary: Discover the Beauty of Philae Temple Guide
Embark on a captivating journey to Philae Temple, a stunning complex dedicated to the goddess Isis. Originally located on Philae Island, the temple was relocated to Agilkia Island in the 1970s to save it from the rising waters of Lake Nasser after the construction of the Aswan High Dam. This remarkable feat of engineering preserved a treasure trove of ancient Egyptian art and architecture. Today, Philae Temple stands as a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of the Egyptian people. Philae Temple's history stretches back to the Ptolemaic period (305-30 BC), with construction continuing through the Roman era. It was one of the last places where the ancient Egyptian religion was practiced openly, with inscriptions dating as late as the 6th century AD. The temple was dedicated to Isis, the goddess of magic, motherhood, and healing, and was a major pilgrimage site for centuries. The relocation of the temple was a massive undertaking, involving dismantling the entire complex and reassembling it on higher ground. Visitors can explore the temple's magnificent pylons, courtyards, and sanctuaries, adorned with intricate carvings and hieroglyphics. Don't miss the Temple of Hathor, dedicated to the goddess of love and music, and the Kiosk of Trajan, a beautiful Roman structure. A sound and light show is offered in the evenings, bringing the temple's history to life. While Philae Island itself doesn't have a unique culinary tradition, Aswan offers a variety of Nubian and Egyptian cuisine. Be sure to try local specialties like ful medames (fava bean stew) and karkadeh (hibiscus tea).
