Las Grietas: Swim in Volcanic Canyons Guide

Las Grietas, meaning "the cracks" in Spanish, is a unique geological formation located near Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island. These stunning volcanic canyons are filled with crystal-clear brackish water, creating a natural swimming pool that is a popular destination for both locals and tourists. Las Grietas were formed by volcanic activity and subsequent erosion. Over time, the earth cracked, creating deep fissures that filled with a mixture of fresh water from underground springs and saltwater from the ocean. This unique combination results in water that is cooler and clearer than the surrounding sea. Visitors to Las Grietas can enjoy swimming and snorkeling in the cool, refreshing water. The canyons offer a dramatic and picturesque setting, with towering rock walls on either side. The water is generally calm and shallow, making it suitable for swimmers of all levels. To reach Las Grietas, you'll need to take a short water taxi from Puerto Ayora to the Finch Bay Hotel, followed by a short walk along a rocky path. While there are no specific culinary traditions directly associated with Las Grietas, Puerto Ayora offers a wide variety of restaurants serving local Ecuadorian cuisine and fresh seafood.

Transportation

To reach Las Grietas, take a short water taxi from the Puerto Ayora pier to the Finch Bay Hotel. From there, follow the marked trail (approximately a 15-20 minute walk) to the entrance of Las Grietas. The trail is rocky, so wear appropriate footwear.
