La Nariz del Diablo Guide
Conquer the Devil's Nose: A Thrilling Train Ride Through the Andes Guide
Prepare for an unforgettable adventure on La Nariz del Diablo, or the Devil's Nose, a legendary railway line carved into the steep Andean mountainside. This engineering marvel offers breathtaking views and a thrilling ride as the train zigzags its way down a near-vertical cliff face. It's a must-do experience for anyone visiting Ecuador and seeking a unique blend of history, adventure, and stunning scenery. The Devil's Nose railway was constructed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a monumental feat of engineering that cost many lives. The project aimed to connect the highlands of Ecuador with the coastal city of Guayaquil. Due to the incredibly steep terrain, a traditional railway line was impossible. Instead, engineers devised a switchback system, allowing the train to ascend and descend the mountain by moving forward and backward along a series of tracks. The name "Devil's Nose" is said to have originated from the immense difficulty and danger involved in its construction, with many workers losing their lives to landslides and accidents. Today, tourists can experience this incredible railway journey. The train departs from Alausí and winds its way down the Devil's Nose, offering spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. While riding on the roof of the train was once a popular (though dangerous) activity, it is now prohibited for safety reasons. However, the views from inside the carriages are still breathtaking. In Alausí, you can also find local restaurants serving traditional Ecuadorian cuisine, such as *locro de papa* (potato soup) and *fritada* (fried pork).
